The Time of Janus is Upon Us

New yeare forth looking out of Janus gate,
Doth seeme to promise hope of new delight:
And bidding th’old Adieu, his pass'd date
Bids all old thoughts to die in dumpish spright
And calling forth out of sad Winters night,
Fresh love, that long hath slept in cheerlesse bower:
Wils him awake, and soone about him dight
His wanton wings and darts of deadly power.

To the ancient Romans, the dual faced God, Janus, was the God of beginnings and transitions, and as such, he was also perceived to be the God who ruled over gates and doors, doorways and passages, as well as also endings.  With one face looking back into the past, and the other into the future, it is little wonder that as we approach New Year's Eve, Janus can easily come to mind.

The Summer Solstice - Time of Abundance

Fetch me that flower: the herb I showed thee once
The juice of it, on sleeping eyelids laid
Will make or man or woman madly dote
Upon the next live creature that it sees
Fetch me this herb, and be thou here again
Ere the Leviathan can swim a league
(The Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare)

As the sun completes its southward journey, it rests briefly over the Tropic of Capricorn before moving northward again.  When it enters the astrological sign of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere, we know that the sun is at its highest and brightest and that the time of the Summer Solstice has arrived.

For the Ngarrindjeri people, the warmth associated with Luwadang continues.  As the sun increases in strength, it dries the land, allowing it to be haunted by the call of ravens, the bird that is often associated with death in many cultures around the world.

Stepping through the Gateway

Over the last few months things have been rather chaotic here at the covenstead as various projects have been focused on and completed, interstate trips made to meet Craft elders as well as to attend conferences, not to mention rites of passages also being marked, and the finishing up of assignments prior to the Summer close-down.

One of the biggest projects to have been completed was the release of In Her Sacred Name: Writings on the Divine Feminine, which marks to second book produced by TDM Publishers.  With over half of the initial order already sold, a second has been placed for delivery in the new year.  More details about how to order this book can be found under the above link.

An evening with Kali Ma

A special event will be taking place on Monday, 10 November 2014.  As part of the Monday Night Meditation group, the Hindu Goddess Kali will be honoured in a special Kali Mantra and Meditation night, with special guest, Devidasan being in attendance and sharing his knowledge about this often feared and rather mistaken Goddess.   Kali is a re-occuring favorite Goddess in the Dark Goddess workshops that are often held around Samhain (May in the Southern Hemisphere - the next Dark Goddess Returns workshop scheduled to take place on Saturday, 9 May 2015) and as such, various blogs have already been written about her that can be found here and here (this article first appearing in the now obsolete Insight magazine in 2009 or 2010).

Poem for the Spring Equinox

As the sacred Wheel of the Years turns ever closer to the Spring Equinox (occuring on 23 September this year), I thought I would share a poem by thinker and spiritual Master Jelaluddin Rumi (1207 - 1273).

The Temple of the Dark Moon will be celebrating equinox at the beautiful surroundings that is the Waite Arboretum, Urrbrae (cnr Fullarton and Cross Roads) on Sunday, 28 September.  Bring the family and your picnic for a relaxing where you can explore the historic house (entry fee) and scented garden, walk the labyrinth at this time of balance and then wander though the many species of trees that are planted on the premises.

Much Writings for the Gods

Spring has sprung and as the days are getting increasingly longer, it is had to believe that almost a month has passed since my last entry.  It is not as if I have been resting on my laurels - just that at times other commitments can take over, making finding the time (and the inspiration) to blog almost impossible.  Indeed, a great deal of activity has been occurring, with the fruits of these labours to to be coming to the forefront over the next few months.

Experiencing the Power of Ritual and Magick

Every couple of years the Temple of the Dark Moon runs a training circle (in various forms) and commencing on 4 September 2014, The Wytch's Circle will be held over four consecutive Thursday evenings.

The focus of The Wytch's Circle is on learning and developing the art of ritual and magick as well as providing insight into the workings of the Craft in the modern age.

While designed for those who have had some ritual experience (either solitary or within a group), The Wytch's Circle can also cater for the practitioner who is seeking more advance and indepth instruction in order to further their own practice.

Is Your Word Your Bond?

Part of membership within many coven or esoteric group involves the rite whereby an oath is sworn.  Sometimes, depending on the structure of the group, there are a number of oaths that are sworn as the member moves through the ranks.  Regardless of the number of oaths, very rarely does one supersede any made previously  - more often than not, any subsequent oaths tend to for an additional layer (or enhancement) of the initial oath.

The word oath comes from the Anglo-Saxon āð (also referred to as a "a true principle or belief, especially one of fundamental importance.  An oath is also a "solemn appeal to a deity", as well as being a "formally affirmed statement or promise accepted as an equivalent of an appeal to a deity or to a revered person or thing; affirmation".

The Power of Disengagement

The Power of Disengagement
Playing Mind Games

Life should not be lived through a series of mind games,
but from truth and looking deep within.

For better or worse, many people have been raised to believe that communicating in an honest and open way will not get them what they want.  They have learned, instead, to play mind games or go on power trips in the service of their ego’s agenda.  People stuck in this outmoded and inefficient style of communication can be trying at best and downright destructive at worst.  We may get caught up in thinking we have to play the same games in order to defend ourselves, but that will only lead us deeper into confusion and conflict. The best way to handle people like this is to be clear and honest with them.

Friday the 13th - a Day of Superstition and Modern Urban Myth

This coming Friday will be Friday the 13th - a day of superstition and misconception, a number of which already seem to be making their way around various social media sites.  As such, I thought I would revisit the blog entry that I made back in January 2012.  The difference between the Friday the 13th which occurred two and a bit years ago and this year, is that this time around, the Full Moon will also occur on the same day (at 1:42pm in Adelaide to be exact).  This occurance apparently has been interpreted (by some) as equating to Friday being a "super magical event" - something that has left me scratching my head.

Below the Surface - Finding Deep Strength

Having just written about the upcoming Dark Goddess workshop that I will be hosting through The Goddess House on Saturday, 14 June 2014Madisyn Taylor from Daily Om, has come up with an essay on a similar topic - that being going within in order to move ahead.

Below the Surface - Finding Deep Strength

When we look back on our lives we see that
we have survived many trials and often to our own amazement.

We have all faced moments in our lives when the pressure mounts beyond what we feel we can handle, and we find ourselves thinking that we do not have the strength to carry on. Sometimes we have just gotten through a major obstacle or illness only to find another one waiting for us the moment we finally catch our breath. Sometimes we endure one loss after another, wondering when we will get a break from lifes travails. It does not seem fair or right that life should demand more of us when we feel we have given all we can, but sometimes this is the way life works.

Connecting with the Divine by performing a Puja

Having attended a puja just recently, I thought I would share this posting from Madisyn Taylor of Daily Om.

Connecting with the Divine - Puja

Performing a Hindu puja ritual is a wonderful way
to experience direct communication with the divine.

Forging a spiritual connection with the Divine is the ultimate goal of many forms of worship.  In our devotions, we transcend the limitations of our humanity using prayers, rituals, and invocations, or we seek the celestial in sacred items such as statuary, imagery, or natural objects.  In the Hindu tradition, worshipers bond with the divine through the puja ritual.  The purpose of the ritual is to create an atmosphere in which humans and spiritual beings can enjoy communion with one another. Though participants show reverence for their chosen deities, puja serves to bring the former and the latter together on an energetic level. Performing a puja ritual is thus a wonderful way to experience direct communication with the divine.

The Charge of the Goddess

"Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month or better it be when the moon is full, then you shall assemble is some secret space ..."

and so goes "The Charge of the Goddess", a piece of prose which is probably closest thing to scripture that originated out of Wicca.  During this prose the Goddess seems to instruct (or guide) her followers in ways as to how she is recognised and can be worshipped.  Right from the beginning, the Goddess is introduced as "the Great Mother" who has been recognised by many difficult people and cultures by an assortment of names - Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arianrhod, and Brid.

April Full Moon Gathering

The April Full Moon will be occuring on Tuesday, 15 April 2014 (at 5:13 pm CST) and fall in the sign of Libra, the Scales, as well as it being a total lunar eclipse (however as the moon will be below the horizon in Adelaide some of the time, the first part of the eclipse will not be visible).  A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon line up so the earth's shadow falls on the moon, darkening it.

According to USA Today, the April eclipse "marks the start of a lunar tetrad.  That event occurs when there are four successive total lunar eclipses, with no partial lunar eclipses in between, each of which is separated from the other by six full moons."   The other three eclipses of this lunar tetrad are on 8 October this year and then 8 April and 28 September in 2015.

Full Moon in Virgo

March's full moon will be in the sign of Virgo, the only constellation in the zodiac that actually depicts a woman.  At times considered to be an old maid, the secretary or librarian, or even a housecleaner with OCD, Virgo is also the “Virgin” (maiden) aspect of the Goddess, the one who is able to recreate life on her own without a partner.

Essential Authenticity - Revealing your True Self

The following is a posting from Madisyn Taylor of Daily Om.

ESSENTIAL AUTHENTICITY - REVEAING YOUR TRUE SELF

Our true selves exist whether we acknowledge them or not,
often buried under fears and learned behaviour.

Identity is an elusive concept. We feel we must define ourselves using a relatively small selection of roles and conscious character traits, even if none accurately represents our notion of “self".  The confusion surrounding our true natures is further compounded by the fact that society regularly asks us to suppress so much of our emotional, intellectual, and spiritual vibrancy. Yet we are, in truth, beings of light - pure energy inhabiting physical bodies, striving for enlightenment while living earthly lives.

An Insight into Working with Deity

Due to the uniqueness of the southern Australian weather at this time of year, especially when attempting to fit in seasonal observances that originated from the Northern Hemisphere, the recent Lughnasadh rite saw a step taken away from the more "traditional" into something that more closely echoed what was happening within the landscape around us.  Coming on the end of an early heatwave (where temperatures hovered over 40C for almost of week), the sight of an annihilated garden left the concept of "bringing in the harvest" rather far from our minds.  A substitute was needed for this time of year and the one who naturally came to mind was the Egyptian lion-headed Goddess, Sekhmet.

Heatwaves, Lughnasadh, Brighid's Fires and Rosaries

This new calendar year has certainly leaped out of the starters' box and as the ending of the first month is nearing, I have finally had a chance to write something.  Following on from my last blog, with another heatwave is also looming for the coming week, I've stopped any attempt in trying to tidy up the garden from the last one.  This way I am hoping that the "mess" of dead leaves may form some kind of protection, at least in the way of mulch for those plants who have survived "Round 1".

Making the Most of a Respite from the Heat

There is no doubt that summer has arrived to the southern parts of Australia, and announcing its arrival, a heatwave that included Adelaide being confirmed as the hottest city in the world on Thursday, 16 January 2014, where the temperature peaked at 44.2C (111F).  Thankfully it did not reached it anticipated 46C.  However, in other parts around South Australia it did.

As I write this, a welcoming cool change has arrived but with it, the winds have pushed the heat, and indeed the fires eastward.

The Energy of Cities

Adelaide - the city in which I reside
A view over the Torrens River
A belated happy new Gregorian calendar year to everyone.  May this new year, which equates to the number "7" (an introverted and somewhat mystical number in esoteric numerology) bring you wealth, happiness, and most important of all, peace.

The reasons for the delay in blogging have been many fold - work, preparing and running various coven events, writing obligations, re-editing and formatting the manuscript for Dancing the Sacred Wheel for it to be re-released this year, and even formatting the manuscript of my second book.  On top of all this, LunaNoireCreations has recently opened on Etsy, with more stock to be added over the coming months.
